Guide: Image Compressor
↑ Back to toolWhat it does
This image compressor makes a smaller JPEG in the browser. Drop a photo on the box, or click it and choose a file. Pick Chat, Email, or Link preview, then move the quality slider if you want the file lighter or sharper. The original stays where it was. You download a new file.
How to use
- Drop a JPEG, PNG, WebP, or GIF onto the box, or click to choose one.
- Pick a size. Chat and Email keep the whole frame. Link preview crops the center to 1200 × 630.
- Read the before and after size. Download when the preview looks right.
Chat, email, link preview
- Chat — long side at most 1280 pixels, JPEG around 72%. A phone photo from a camera roll usually drops a lot.
- Email — long side at most 1600 pixels, a bit more quality. Still the whole picture, not a crop.
- Link preview — exactly 1200 × 630, cropped from the center. That is the frame most social previews use. Put the file on your site, then point the Open Graph tool at its address.
Quality
The slider is how hard the JPEG squeezes the photo. About 70% is a normal chat picture. About 90% stays close to the original and the file is larger. The percentage on the result is the file size, not a change in the pixel count. Dimensions are listed separately, such as 1280 × 720.
When the file grows
Compression is not a promise that every file gets smaller. A PNG of a flat screenshot, or a JPEG that was already saved at a low quality, can come out larger. The card says larger in that case. Lower the slider, or keep the original if it was already the right size.
Common mistakes
- Using Link preview for a portrait. The crop is wide. A tall photo loses the top and bottom. Use Chat when the whole frame matters.
- Expecting a PNG. Photos are saved as JPEG. Flat diagrams can look softer. Raise the quality if edges look muddy.
- Dropping a HEIC from a phone. If the browser cannot decode it, export a JPEG first.
- Replacing the only copy. Download is a new file. Do not delete the original until you have opened the download.
FAQ
Is the photo uploaded?
No. Drop it or click to choose. The browser resizes and re-encodes it on this device. Download the result. Closing the tab drops the preview.
What does Chat do?
It keeps the whole picture, shrinks the long side to 1280 pixels if it is larger, and saves a JPEG around 72% quality. That is small enough for a message and still readable.
What does Email do?
The same idea, with a 1600 pixel long side and a slightly higher quality. Use it when the picture should stay clearer and the attachment limit is generous.
What does Link preview do?
It crops the middle of the picture to 1200 by 630 pixels, the size most link previews expect. Faces and products near the edge can be cut. Check the preview before you download.
Why did the file get larger?
A PNG or a screenshot that was already small can grow when it is saved as a JPEG, or a JPEG can grow if you raise the quality above the original. The result says larger instead of pretending it shrank.
Which files can I open?
JPEG, PNG, WebP, and GIF. A format this browser cannot decode, such as some HEIC photos, shows an error. Export a JPEG from the photos app and try again.
